As Arizona starts reaching 100 degree weather and water activities serve as the perfect way to cool off, Water Safety Month serves as a timely reminder to prioritize pool safety and safe water activities during the summer months. With families and individuals gearing up for aquatic fun, it’s essential to observe precautions to prevent accidents and ensure a safe summer experience

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning remains a significant concern, especially in pool environments. However, by adhering to essential safety guidelines, everyone can enjoy water activities responsibly and mitigate risks effectively.

Here are some key tips to enhance pool safety and ensure safe water activities this summer:

  • Supervision is Key:

Always supervise individuals, especially children, around pool areas. Assign a designated adult to watch over swimmers at all times, even if lifeguards are present.

  • Enforce Pool Rules:

Establish and enforce pool rules to promote safe behavior. Emphasize the importance of no running, diving only in designated areas, and refraining from rough play around the pool.

  • Secure Pool Access:

Install barriers such as fences with self-latching gates around pools to prevent unauthorized access, particularly by young children. Ensure that gates are kept closed when the pool is not in use.

  • Keep Rescue Equipment Handy:

Maintain essential rescue equipment, such as life rings and reaching poles, near the pool area. Ensure that all family members and caregivers know how to use this equipment in case of emergencies.

  • Teach Water Safety Skills:

Enroll individuals, especially children, in swimming lessons to equip them with essential water safety skills. Familiarize them with basic water survival techniques and how to respond in emergency situations.

  • Check Pool Conditions:

Regularly inspect and maintain pool equipment to ensure optimal safety. Monitor water quality and chemical levels to prevent the spread of waterborne illnesses.

  • Practice Sun Safety:

Protect yourself and your family from sunburn and heat-related illnesses by applying sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and staying hydrated during pool activities.

  • Be Prepared for Emergencies:

Learn CPR and basic first aid techniques. In the event of an emergency, immediate intervention can make a crucial difference in outcomes. Free CPR classes are available this month on

Sunday, May 19 and Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m.
