Emergency Notification Registration

9/28/2023

Dear Town Residents,

As we approach another season in our beautiful desert community, it's essential to be proactive in safeguarding our homes and neighborhoods against the threat of wildland fires. Desert wildland fires have the potential to spread rapidly due to our extreme heat, low humidity, and dry vegetation, regardless of property lines or jurisdictional boundaries. To help minimize the risk and protect our community, we encourage everyone to get "Firewise."

 Why Getting "Firewise" Matters:

Desert wildfires can spread quickly due to the unique conditions in our region. To reduce the risk of rapid wildfire spread and potential damage to our homes, it's crucial to remove non-native weeds and grasses from your properties. This small but significant step can make a big difference in our collective safety.

Stay Informed with the Community Emergency Notification System (CENS):

Are you signed up for the Community Emergency Notification System (CENS)? CENS is a vital emergency notification tool used throughout Maricopa County, including the Town of Carefree. It provides critical information and instructions in the event of emergencies such as wildland fires, flash floods, hazardous material spills, and public safety threats.

 How CENS Works:

In times of emergencies, local and county emergency managers identify affected areas and distribute important messages through CENS. The system relies on the Maricopa Regional 9-1-1 database for landline phone numbers within the messaging area. However, please note that cell phone numbers and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone numbers are not automatically included.

Register for CENS to Ensure You Receive Emergency Notifications:

To ensure you receive crucial emergency notifications, please register your wireless phone number with CENS. It's a quick and straightforward process:

  1. Open your internet browser and go to the following address: maricopa.gov/1755/CENS.
  2. Click on the registration link provided, which will guide you through submitting the required information.
  3. The registration process takes only a minute or two to complete, and it could make all the difference in staying informed during emergencies.

By getting "Firewise" and staying connected through the Community Emergency Notification System, we can enhance our community's preparedness and safety. Let's work together to protect our homes, families, and neighbors.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to our town's safety.
