Wildfire Season Preparedness
The National Weather Service has forecasted a higher risk for wildland fires in the Desert Foothills region. This risk is associated with the drying desert growth resulting from our above-normal winter rains. Now is the time to prepare and create a minimum 30-foot defensible space around your home. Additionally, clear your property from the non-native weeds to eliminate the fuels which feed those wildfires.

Maricopa County Environmental Services is hosting a “NO FEE” green waste drop-off event:
Dates: April 22nd and 29th.
Time: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Location: Cave Creek Transfer Station 3355 N. Carefree Hwy, Cave Creek, AZ 85331

Special Election
Arizona is a Mail Ballot state. Vote by mail, also called mail-in voting, allows those who are registered to vote to receive a ballot at their designated mailing address a few weeks before the election. After completing the ballot, the registered voter can either mail it back or drop it in a ballot drop-box before Election Day. Carefree is an “All Mail Ballot” jurisdiction. An All Ballot-by-Mail election is when a ballot is automatically mailed to every qualified elector in a jurisdiction, regardless of whether the voter is on the Active Early Voting List (AEVL). These elections also include establishment of ballot replacement sites, where voters may receive and cast a replacement ballot if they would prefer to vote in person. Our ballot replacement site is at the Carefree Council Chambers located at 33 Easy Street, Carefree, AZ. It will be open Monday through Friday, May 8th through May 15th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on May 16th from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. A ballot drop box will also be available at this location.
A ballot drop box will also be available at Town Hall, located at 8 E. Sundial Circle Monday through Friday from April 19th through May 16th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ballot replacement locations are staffed by Maricopa County Elections Department personnel and ballot drop box contents are retrieved, processed, and counted by Maricopa County Elections Department. Registered voters can track their ballot from the time it is printed until it is counted by going to https://elections.maricopa.gov/voting/track-your-ballot.html.
All registered voters in Carefree are provided the opportunity to vote at the Carefree Special Election on May 16th.

Licensing for short-term/vacation rental properties is now open!
Carefree Ordinance 2022-03 was adopted unanimously by the Town Council in February of this year as a means to address common problems associated with short-term/vacation rentals. The Ordinance requires rental property owners/operators to obtain a Carefree Permit for each property and comply with several safety, health and neighborhood notification requirements. The annual license fee is $250 per property.
Before offering for rent or renting a short-term/vacation rental within the Town, the Owner of that short-term rental, or that Owner’s Representative, shall (i) register the short-term/vacation rental with the Town, (ii) obtain a valid Permit, and (iii) obtain a valid transaction privilege tax license under A.R.S. Title 42.
The Town's permit applies only to rentals of less than 30 days. Carefree desires to work with all hosts, guests, and neighbors to maintain the Town's attractive lifestyle. Please see the Town’s web page for an explanation of the permitting process and required forms: https://carefree.org/short-term-vacation-rentals
